Analysis Of Nell And The Wilderness Of North...
Nell is about the story of a young woman named Nell Kelty who has been isolated in the the wilderness of North Carolina since she was born. Growing up, the only people that Nell had contact with were her twin sister, who died when they were young, and her mother, whose death triggers the events of the film. As a result of her upbringing, Nellââ¬â¢s interpersonal communication skills and language abilities are seriously underdeveloped. The young woman soon finds herself in the middle of a power struggle; Dr. Jerome ââ¬Å"Jerryâ⬠Lovell believes that Nell should be able to continue her simple life, while Dr. Paula Olsen wants to institutionalize and study Nell (Apted). Nell explores the development of many interpersonal communication concepts, specifically the concept of self, how perception is shaped, and the creation of interpersonal communication competence. While the film does not go into great analysis of each concept, it provides an adequate overview of interpersonal com munication as whole, and acts as an example of real life application of interpersonal communication concepts. The concept of self made an important appearance, early in the film. Self is defined as an ââ¬Å"evolving composite of self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteemâ⬠(McCornack). Not all of these components are specifically examined in the film.
